Yeah, it’s early. But I went to bed really early, too. Another day, another myLotter, and another bunch of cops on our tail. Meanwhile, I’m not forgetting the countdown of songs that were banned. We’re in the top ten now, and here’s one that you’ve never heard…but should. #8: Black Day in July - Gordon Lightfoot I’ve said this before in reference to folk music, but in this case it bears repeating: folk music was the way a lot of people got their news in the “old days.” That continued after the advent of TV and radio coverage, with “topical songs” popping up all over the place on occasion. Gordon Lightfoot was no stranger to writing songs based on real events. One of his best-known songs is “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” about the November 10, 1975 sinking of the iron ore freighter. One of his least-known songs about a shipwreck is “The Ballad of Yarmouth Castle.” Here’s another instance where Lightfoot simply wrote what happened. And what happened was awful: the Detroit 12th Street riot of July 23, 1967. The newspaper accounts say that 5,000 troops were sent to one U.S. city the next day to join 5,000 National Guardsmen. Wow. I was a child in the 60s, but I remember the news of the riots. It was NOT a pleasant time. Lightfoot captured that brilliantly in this song. And, as with “Ohio,” used earlier in the countdown, it didn’t seem to ring favorably on the politicians (“In the mansion of the governor [side note: the governor at the time was Mitt Romney’s father, George] there’s nothing that is known for sure, the telephone is ringing and the pendulum is swinging”). It wasn’t happening just in Detroit, of course; however, no radio station in Michigan would touch this song. Lots of other stations in or near cities that had experienced similar rioting didn’t want four minutes’ worth of reminder playing on rotation. As a result, you’ve never heard one of Lightfoot’s most powerful tunes. Black Day in July Written by Gordon Lightfoot Recorded by Gordon Lightfoot From Did She Mention My Name?, 1968 Reason banned: politically offensive Is it him or is it me:

I have not heard it before. I find it very interesting though. We have songs today with so much potty mouth to them being played on the radio and we think it's okay.

I know. When I started the countdown I used “The B*tch is Back” by Elton John, and said it was funny how that word wouldn’t be played, then 40 years later we have songs with the “F word” in the title not only getting played but getting nominated for Grammy awards!!

@mom210 — tell me about it! Look at five generations mourning the loss of Tony Bennett, and all he had to do to become the legend he was was sing.

@FourWalls yes, I'm not sure music has gotten better over the years. The bar just keeps getting moved. What can we do now to shock and amaze? humm you all could amaze me, by not showing your bottom cheeks and putting on clothes. I think some grandma needs to get a big bar of soap for them all and teach them some manners

Of course I heard it, living in Canada, listening to CHUM radio... and I'm sure anyone in the border states heard it, too.

I’m glad you heard it. Gordon wasn’t an established national treasure for Canada then.

@BarBaraPrz — as great a songwriter as he was, it certainly didn’t take long.

I was born in the early 60's and have no recollection of this incident, although I learnt about it as I grew up. My hubby's eldest brother was on a bus passing through where the riots were, and I learned so much about the unspoken fears just by hearing him tell us once, he never spoke about it again, of the feelings of those in the bus. But to have the song banned because of what was really happening, is sad. It must have been such an insult to the people involved. Live and let live, regardless of the colour, creed or anything else. We all bleed red, we should all treat each other with respect.

It was a completely different time, when things were allegedly “black and white” (not skin color, but how things were), and the cops were “always” the “good guys.” Well, we’ve seen plenty of evidence to the contrary about that, and it’s always been the case. There’s good and bad in every profession. And yes, we all have the same blood color, and none of it should be spilled!!!

That’s another thing folk songs in the 60s were very good at doing.

@FourWalls No doubt. Bob Dylan's song "Hurricane" has had a lifelong effect on my attitude toward civil rights.

@FourWalls At the auction we have had the weirdest possible. The most fun was some from New York that had never been to an auction

You're right. I haven't heard it before. I don't recall those riots either. Interesting song.

@FourWalls I can understand why they were quick to deny any racial relationship.

It’s definitely one that needs to be heard, if for no other reason to show people where we were and how far we’ve come…in hopes that we don’t go back there.

He had such a long and marvelous career that it is easy for an early song to be buried.

I was actually in Detroit during this time. My father had finished his time in the Navy and Vietnam. He was stationed in Long Beach, Ca. He wanted to move us back to Philly. Mother's brother Buddy and wife we living in Detroit at the time. We spent a week or so with them before heading on to PA. Story was we were sitting outside and was told by the guardsmen to go back inside. I was 1 1/2 at the time so my memories are those of the stories told.

Yeah, I don’t think I would’ve been outside, either. Stray bullets have a way of finding innocent bystanders.

I don't remember this song but I remember seeing the troops and the jeeps at 105th street as I rode by on the bus in Cleveland. Enjoy your day.
