It must be the weekend. The lake is waking up.

Boat wakes, that is. I've noticed many more powerboats cruising back and forth across the section of the lake that makes up my view from here in the outdoor annex. I'm sure that as the day goes on, the number of boats will begin to grow. I have fond memories of the time I owned a powerboat and would cruise Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. My boat wasn't very big (15 feet with a 40-horsepower outboard) but it got me to my fishing and swimming spots. Something I rarely see on this lake is sailboats. I know there is a small sailing school on the north side of the lake, but seldom do I see billowing canvas anywhere on this body of water. Recently, I read a story on the history of Jordan Lake. It is a man-made lake. In fact, it didn't exist during the time I was growing up in Wilmington. The article also cleared up another misconception I had about the lake. It is not a drinking water reservoir for Raleigh. It was created to control the flooding along the river in what was previously the New Hope Valley. Do you have any man-made lakes near you? Do you know why they were created?

Drat! People getting in the way. We have lots of former gravel pits that are now lakes around here

We have some of those, too. Old quarry pits that flooded, that sort of thing.

One of our counties borders in a huge lake. We have friends who live right by the lake. We went out on it once a long time ago with them on their pontoon boat. Not a big fan of being on the lake, too many out there drinking and going way too fast for as many are on it.

I firmly believe that laws against drunk boating should be as strict as the laws against drunk driving.

I’m sure I have some man made lakes close to me, but I’m just not sure which ones they are.

We had some man-made lakes in Iowa. We have many reservoirs here that can be used for recreation. I am not sure how they were created, dam it!

Somewhere in central California, you guys have a new lake that used to be an old lake but was dried up by all the irrigation and water needs of surrounding cities, don't you? Scientists are saying it could take a year for Tulare Lake to dry up again if it doesn't get any more infusions of water.

If I’m not mistaken Lake Allatoona is a man made like. I know there was an Indian tribe located where the lake is before the Indians were chased away from their homeland.

The only lake nearby is Lake Erie; and that's definitely not a man-made lake. Enjoy your weekend.
