Obsessed With Credit Cards

My Facebook friend confided in me that she's depressed. As someone who went through depression, I take this very seriously. Mental health is as important as physical health, so I was so concerned when she told me about it. Apparently, Citibank and Metrobank (a Philippine bank) both denied her credit card applications, and she said she felt insulted and depressed. It took everything in me not to laugh at her, because I don't think I have heard something as silly as this (in my opinion). For one thing, she already has 4 credit cards - I am not sure if they are maxed out or what - but she said she wanted those 2 more since she does not have any from them. I try to be mindful and sensitive because I know we all process things differently. What's depressing for me may not be a big deal for her and vice versa. But from what I gathered; she just wants to have 2 more credit cards so she can say that she has credit cards from these 2 merchants. That's it. So I just tried to tell her that this might be a blessing in disguise, as who knows what kind of charges these two may incur, or how prone to scam and hacking their system is. And her not being approved is actually a good thing. I think she saw my point, but I don't know how to convince her from feeling insulted by them when they declined her credit card applications.

Oh, lord. That got her depressed? God bless you for not laughing your rear off at her. You said the right things to her definitely. Having been depressed from birth, I feel for anyone else who experiences it. But what a thing to be depressed about! Her feelings are valid, but I’m glad to hear that’s “all” it was.

Same here! I just try to understand her because her capacity to process "hardships" is not as strong as ours. But I hope she learns life and how her issue, in the grand scheme of things, is not worth being depressed over. Maybe she's just being dramatic, or maybe she is not used to being told "no".
