Cooked Tinola for Lunch

It is nearly 9 a.m. here, and I got up early to make tinola for lunch. It is one of the most popular Filipino dishes in the Philippines. Because it is simple to prepare, I chose to cook it today. I am sure there will be plenty leftover, so I will store it in the fridge and reheat it tomorrow. I loathe wasting food. I'd make red rice to go with this dish. Rice is a staple here. What is the local staple food in where you live?

That’s a good question. Maybe white rice or mashed potatoes? I have never had Tinola. If you are talking about a main dish, it has to be fried chicken. It seems like in the United States, the Midwest and the South always has fried chicken. I don’t anymore, but it’s definitely a staple.

@freelancermariagrace We just don’t have a lot of Filipino restaurants around here, although I found one about 35 minutes away. Chinese, Japanese, and Thai restaurants are everywhere, and Korean restaurants can be found on occasion, but despite so many Filipino people, it seems not many open restaurants. I don’t eat fried chicken a lot just because it is so fattening, but wow, it’s good. Especially when it is homemade.

Tinola is a local dish from the Philippines. It's fairly simple to create. This is available in restaurants around the United States. Fried chicken, oh, fried chicken! Why do you no longer have it?

@AmbiePam That is quite far. I hope you'll get to try some Filipino dishes in the future. Japanese, Thai, and Korean are some of my favorite cuisines. Yes, it is! Home-made fried chicken is the best!

I miss tinola, but right now the weather is too hot for it. Maybe this coming fall or winter, I will make it.

I think rice and any type of potatoes is the main staple food in the USA. We also love our pasta dishes.

@cacay1 This is chicken tinola or chicken soup? I am not sure. It has chicken, green papaya and snow cabbage.

I was supposed to make chicken tinola last Friday. I went to Landers to get the ingredients. I wanted green papayas and chili leaves. Unfortunately, there wasn't any green papaya at Landers and their small pack of chili leaves cost about Php 85! No, thanks. I bought a bunch of pak choy and made chicken nilaga instead.

I'm sure your nilaga is delicious! I used green papaya instead of sayote in my chicken tinola, and it tastes different. And chili leaves sound pricey. Oh well, I'm not surprised because you shopped at Landers . Have a great day!
