After today I officially retire and pass my mantle of “best female player in the Indiana Putting Tour” to Wanda (because, like me, she’s now the only female player on our tour ). Before I have lunch and then go off to the course I’ll humor you with another song that humored me. Hope you remember this one from back in the 70s. Junk Food Junkie - Larry Groce If you don’t remember the song, you hopefully have felt this man’s legacy. Larry Groce co-founded the roots/Americana music program Mountain Stage on NPR and served as its host until 2021. But this song was his one hit in terms of Billboard success, and it was a top ten doozy. And I have to reiterate that this song really did come out in 1976, because it sounds so 21st century (“I only eat good sea salt, white sugar don’t touch my lips”). This was probably banned by the BBC for all of the mentions of products (“Dr. Pepper and old Moon Pie”), so I’m sorry if my friends in the UK are just getting around to this one. The jokes are dated now (“I’m a friend to old Euell Gibbons” [who did Post Grape Nuts commercials in the 70s until his death [from natural causes, of course ] in 1975, right before this song was released]), but this is still funny…especially for anyone who’s tried to diet. Enjoy this calorie-free joke…and I’ll leave it to you to look it up if you don’t remember what Hostess Ding-Dongs were. It has been ages since I heard this song. Every single junk food he mentioned except Dr. Pepper (yuck) is or was a favorite of mine when I was growing up.

I think he mentioned Dr. Pepper because the real Moon Pie accompaniment, RC Cola, wouldn’t fit the meter.

@DWDavis — or could be that Larry’s from West Virginia.

@FourWalls That could be it. RC Cola was the natural beverage to enjoy with a Moon Pie.

Yeah, if only broccoli and kale tasted like the things in this song we’d all be skinny.

@FourWalls I like broccoli; but I could pass on the kale. Spinach is OK.

I liked Ho-Ho’s better than Ding Dongs, but there was a lot more cake in the Ding Dongs.
