I have always preferred to call the season autumn because fall sounds more like I am not referring to all the wonderful colors and happenings during this season but to just the falling leaves.
Here are some interesting autumn facts:
Autumn is derived from the French word automne with Latin roots autumnus. Both Shakespeare and Chaucer used the term in their writing.
The British prefer autumn more while the Americans prefer fall.
It is a time when deciduous trees drop their leaves. I had a beautiful tall deciduous pine at my front garden fence in Latvia. In the autumn all of its needles turned yellow and fell off. It was bare during the winter and frosted with snow. In the spring it slowly got its green needles which stayed soft and pliable into the summer.

@rasmasandra Fall sounds too unfeeling to me, hard and clinical. Autumn is melancholic, romantic and shot through with sadness. “Les sanglots longs. Des violons. De l'automne. Blessent mon coeur. D'une langueur. Monotone” comme a dit si bien Verlaine. Paris is all about autumn, regret and fallen leaves. Now you’ve got me started and I’ll not sleep tonight.

I do not believe I had ever seen a deciduous pine.
I guess I am thinking of Evergreens that never shed.
I bet Latvia was so lovely in the fall..I mean Autumn.

I love the cooler, crisp temperatures of fall but hate the winter that follows. Also hate the shorter days. Hope you are doing well and have a great day.

@LindaOHio as much as I hated the intolerable summer heat and the autumn relieves us of that when the days are black just after 6 PM I wonder how to get through the dark lonely night and sometimes I keep working online til about 12 and then just crash into bed and sleep

@RasmaSandra I'm sorry you're lonely. I think about what it would be like if I lost my husband (he's at the age that I think about it constantly); and I would be devastated.

The Autumn facts were interesting to read.
Wonderful memories of Latvia.
By chance, do you have any plans of visiting their in the future?
To me also, Autumn sounds better than Fall.

I always get fall or autumn's dates wrong. Seems like every other season starts on the 21st. Fall is always different. I was thinking it was fall two days ago.

@crossbones27 just go outside and hum a few bars of the song the falling leaves take a look around and you will believe that autumn has arrived
