In the mid-1900s the diamond companies did thig HUGE marketing campaign that was promoting diamonds as engagement rings. They also prommoted the idea that a man should spend an average of 2 months salary for an engagement ring. Before this marketing campaign engagement rings could be anything - opals, sapphires, rubies - anything at all. And they weren't always rings. Sometimes an engagement gift was a pin or a necklace. The expensive diamond engagement ring thing is all part of one of the most successful marketing campaigns in history. When it comes right down to it, you should have the kind of ring or gift that you want - not what someone else says you should have. I think you should tell your fiance that you want to pick it out yourself. If you want a big flashy diamond and he is willing to pay for it, then go for it. If you want a small, dainty ring, then get that.

Thank you so much you actually answered my question. I knew there was some silly folklore about so many months salery, I didn't realise it was a marketing ploy. Very good information. Once again, thank you. :)

You are very welcome. I'm glad that could help. That marketing campaign has always bothered me. Especially since, 50 years later, perople think it's some kind of special tradition. LOL!

I would say whatever you can afford. It is pointless to go into debt over a ring. You should shop for the ring together and look for one in your price range. There are many, many places to buy a ring and get a good deal.

Once, I heard man should spend about his 3 to 4 month salary but I dont think that important. I think as long as you like the ring and he likes it, prices dont really matter. My hubby went and bought me a ring that looks different than regular wedding rings. I love it because I havent seem the same type of ring on other women's finger. Maybe you should go with him to store and show him what kind you want.

The jewelry companies would love for you to think that, but wouldn't it be better to save that same money for a down payment on a house. Get a nice gold band and be just as married. Later he can get the big rock for your 10th anniversary.

I agree that one should not have to spend a certain amount of cash it more impotant what you like not how much it cost. My best friend jsut got engaged and her ring was a bit over $1,000 while my girlfriend likes really simply thing and the one ring she keeps showing me is only $200 so I for one would want to give something they like not just to spend a certain amount based on some formula
