Massage day! But before I go enjoy a long overdue massage I’ll fling another song with bad grammar in the title at you. We’re staying in the 1950s and staying in soul music for today’s selection. Turn it up and enjoy!
Ain’t That Love - Ray Charles
One of the great mysteries of this world is why Brenda Lee is in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Career-wise, she only had four country hits. Most of her chart success was in rock and roll.
I bring that up because it was her version of this song that I first heard. But then, Brother Ray is in the Country Music Hall of Fame as well.
Now, him, I understand. In 1962 Charles recorded an album called Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, and it opened the door for a lot of people to be introduced to the greatest of country music. (Sorry, Linda.
) The later equivalent was Elvis Costello’s Almost Blue, which gave a lot of punks and new wavers their first taste of country music.
But this isn’t country. No, this is the R&B that put Ray Charles on the map. Even though Charles did just about anything and everything in his illustrious career, soul was his home.
And, in my opinion, he’s one of the two reasons to see The Blues Brothers even if you don’t like music or comedies: he steals that movie as the owner of Ray’s. (The other blow-up-the-screen scene stealer is Aretha Franklin, singing “Think.”)
One of the greatest singers in soul, pop, rock, and country. That’s Ray Charles.

Not familiar with this one. I really wish we could go back to the 50s-70s music-wise! Have a good weekend.

Oh, well, we’ll try again tomorrow. Probably another one you won’t know.
