This is book 2 of a series. The first book is The Doctor's Wife, which I did not read. After reading this I don't feel I need to because I guess I know the back story now. I know there is a third book in the series because this book left me hanging. Literally, there were so many loose ends really forcing the reader to read the next book. I am not a fan of that. It's like I read the whole book for no reason. Fern Devlin is the recently widowed wife of Dr. Drew Devlin. She is determined to get on with her life. She buys a new car, a big new house, and even starts dating. In public she plays the poor widow of the murdered Dr. Devlin whose mistress was charged for his murder. The new boyfriend, Roger, is everything anyone could want in a man. He is spontaneous, romantic, attentive. Is he too good to be true though? Roger is actually the former tennis buddy of Dr. Devlin and doesn't believe that the mistress is guilty. He thinks Fern has something to do with it so he is dating her, trying to get her drunk enough to spill the truth. But could it be the cause of HIS demise? Fern will go to the ends of the earth to protect herself and her secrets. That may include murder. Like I said, this story left me hanging. It is such a short book (227 pages) that perhaps the next book could be rolled into this one to make one story. Thrillers are usually longer than 200 pages. And this is a thriller. There is suspense, tension, and we're rooting for the bad guy. Say what? I think it would have helped to read The Doctor's Wife first, but I didn't like this enough to continue with the series forwards or backwards.

I hope the next one is out or will be out soon. Fills like a move series that one keeps on checking when the next will be out

I often root for the bad guy in some of the books that I read. The bad characters are sometimes the most interesting unless they have done something really awful.

If I had read book 1 in the series I may have felt differently. But it would also have ruined the surprise twists in the second book. The bad character was likeable to me.
