Over this holiday weekend, we lost a very important person in our family's life. My children's father and the grandfather to our grandchildren passed away on Christmas morning. However, that is not what I want to write about. But what I do want to write about are two important things.
First is sepsis and septic shock. I learned a lot more about this horrible situation that can be deadly so quickly. I had always heard about sepsis with burst appendix but not in the kind of cases that took my ex-husband. He had pneumonia but had not gone to the doctor for it. He lived alone and was found non-responsive but alive on Friday evening a week ago today. He was taken to the hospital and on ventilator but remained non-responsive until he passed on Christmas morning. It is very important for people to understand what sepsis and septic shock are, the symptoms, causes, etc. So please go to this website and be sure to read everything. All sorts of things can cause this horrible situation that destroys your organs.
The second thing I want to talk about that is important for people living alone. That is to find a friend or family member that you can trust to follow through on this deal you will make with them. The deal is to daily...DAILY...text each other either good morning, good night, or both. If one of you...or you can and should select multiple people to be in on this...if one of you do not receive any texts for a day, please, check up on that person, either by visiting, or calling a neighbor, or even the police to do a wellness check. My ex-husband had this system in place with at least 2 people we know of. But when they had not heard from him from Tuesday night and Wednesday night, they did nothing. Nothing! They thought maybe he was just busy and forgot, even though they knew he had not been feeling well. It actually took his boss who had not heard from him since Tuesday, to finally call the police on Friday to check up on him. So if you do this deal with someone else, please make sure to follow through with checking up if you do not receive those all-important good mornings and good nights. Perhaps if either of those friends of his had followed through right away the next day, he may have been found early enough for him to have survived. So do not make this deal if you are not going to be trustworthy to follow through. But find someone who will.
