Day 49 – Obedience Exodus 1:8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” 11 Therefore, they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Rameses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. They were in dread of the children of Israel. 13 The Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. 14 They made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. Their service in which they made them serve was rigorous. 15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you will kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she will live.” 17 The midwives feared God (Elohiym) and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them but saved the male children alive. 18 The king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.” 20 Therefore, God (Elohiym) dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew mighty. 21 So it was, because the midwives feared God (Elohiym), He provided households for them. 22 Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you will cast into the river, and every daughter you will save alive.” God’s name: Elohiym – Mighty God Theos – Mighty God - Greek God’s character: Mercy Provider What do you do when you’re told to do something that isn’t legal or moral? Do you do what is expected of you or do you give excuses why you couldn’t fulfill the request? The new king of Egypt saw how mighty the Israelites had become and instructed the midwives to kill the male children as soon as they were born. However, the midwives feared Elohiym and did not obey the king and told him the Hebrew women gave birth before they arrived. Then Pharaoh gave the edict for all male children to be thrown into the Nile as soon as they were born. Meantime, Elohiym honored the midwives for not obeying Pharaoh and keeping His children alive. When faced with the decision to obey man and the immoral requests given to them, or to obey Elohiym, Christians obey Elohiym, or they should. Elohiym blesses those who obey Him and rejects those who go against His will and deny Him. Peter and John stood before the council when they healed a man and told them not to speak the name of Jesus. Acts 4:19 Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” Elohiym will reward you for your obedience and faith in Him. He gave the midwives’ families because they feared, reverenced, Him. He will do the same for you. Elohiym will bless you in ways you least expect when you honor Him. He will provide everything you need and more when you give Him first place in your life. Mark 10:23 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God (Theos)!” 24 The disciples were astonished at His words. Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” 28 Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” 29 Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. Jesus never promised life would be easy, but it would be fulfilling. He blesses those who obey Him, instead of obeying the dictates of those who reject Him. What will you do to receive Elohiym’s blessings in your life? The choice is yours. Obey Elohiym or man. Let’s pray: Father, help me see the big picture when someone asks me to do something that isn’t right or moral. Let me seek Your will in every circumstance and know Your blessing in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 7 March 2024 by Valerie Routhieaux The image belongs to me.
