Day 68 – Elohiym’s Voice Exodus 20:1 Elohiym spoke these words, saying: 2 “I am JEHOVAH your Elohiym, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 “You will have no other elohiym before Me. 4 You will not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth; 5 you will not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, JEHOVAH your Elohiym, am a jealous El, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You will not take the name of JEHOVAH your Elohiym in vain, for JEHOVAH will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you will labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of JEHOVAH your Elohiym. In it you will do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days JEHOVAH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore, JEHOVAH blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which JEHOVAH your Elohiym is giving you. 13 “You will not murder. 14 “You will not commit adultery. 15 “You will not steal. 16 “You will not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You will not covet your neighbor’s house; you will not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” 18 Now the people witnessed the thundering, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood far off. 19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not Elohiym speak with us, lest we die.” 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for Elohiym has come to test you, that His fear may be before you, so you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood far off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where Elohiym was. 22 Then JEHOVAH said to Moses, “Thus you will say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I talked with you from heaven. 23 You will not make anything to be with Me—elohiym of silver or elohiym of gold you will not make for yourselves. 24 An altar of earth you will make for Me, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings, your peace offerings, your sheep, and your oxen. In every place where I record My name, I will come to you, and I will bless you. 25 If you make Me an altar of stone, you will not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it. 26 Nor will you go up by steps to My altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.’ God’s name: Elohiym – Mighty God El – God JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal God’s character: Lawgiver From the time you’re born, your parents instilled in you a sense of right and wrong. Throughout your life, you knew the laws your parents instilled in you, and strove to be obedient long after you left home. You instilled those same laws in your children. You displayed them in the workplace and everywhere you went. Elohiym gave the children of Israel His laws, known as the Ten Commandments. In them He told His people the consequences of disobedience. When the children of Israel saw the thick cloud, the thunder and lightning, and heard JEHOVAH’S voice, they were afraid. They told Moses to speak with Elohiym because they feared they would die with such close contact with JEHOVAH. Many Christians feel the same way about Elohiym that the Israelites did. They’re okay with their pastor or minister getting close to JEHOVAH, but they don’t want to hear Elohiym’s voice, afraid of what they will hear. Instead, Christians believe only Elohiym speaks to them through His Word. You don’t need to be afraid to hear His voice. When you spend time with Elohiym in His Word, in prayer, in Bible study, with other believers, you sense what Elohiym says to you and let others know what He ‘said’ to you. It’s like Moses going up to the mountain of Elohiym and coming back with His message. JEHOVAH spoke with Moses face to face, but He did not speak to Israel in the same manner except for the one time when they begged Moses to speak to Him and they would obey what JEHOVAH told them through Moses. When will you listen for Elohiym’s voice? He wants to speak to you, not only to your heart, giving you a sense of what He wants you to know, but He wants you to hear His voice. He wants to speak to you as a friend speaks to you, face to face. Will you let Him speak to you? Will you listen? Don’t rely on what someone else says Elohiym said but listen for yourself and hear what He says to you. Let’s pray: Father, I want to hear Your voice when You speak to me. I don’t want to hear only a sense of what You want me to hear, but I want to hear You. Speak to me and I will listen. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Is it easy to know when it is God's voice speaking?
