Fixin' What Isn't Broken

Why is it when something works, someone comes along and decides what isn't broken needs to be fixed???? It always seems like whenever we get used to the way things work, those things get changed. And their fix is never for the better, it seems. Fixed for whom? Not for me. So, this time it is Walmart's website for the store delivery and pickup. I choose delivery most of the time and then I have to pay a tip. I don't mind the tip because someone is doing me a favor. So, what was not broken but now has been fixed? It is the way they handle out of stock items and substitutions. It used to be that if there was something out of stock, you would get a text/email telling you this so you could go back to the site and choose your own substitutions. The emails/texts always came in a fair amount of time so that we had time to make those substitutions. Now it is all different. Now you can go in and click on items individually and supposedly choose your substitutions? I do not know when this option was put on there. The last substitution option I saw was that I could click either allow substitutions or don't allow substitutions with the default being to allow them. Back around Christmas or so, I ordered a large spiral cut honey ham. They were out of stock, but I don't even think I got a text. I might have gotten the email but really didn't check. When the delivery came, the person said that there was a substitution. I looked and low and behold, the ham was out of stock. Wouldn't reason tell you that if the person ordered a whole ham, you would substitute another whole ham? Nope. Did not happen. They substituted a single ham steak. A single slice of ham. It is holiday season. People order whole hams for holiday dinners. How do you think someone is going to prepare a holiday dinner with a single slice of ham? Of course, it seems to be always something you want or need right away. So today, as I said in another earlier post, I did my Walmart delivery grocery list and shop. I ordered several things, but one in particular was for my supper today. The out-of-stock item was what I had planned for my supper. Brats in hotdog buns. No problem with the buns I ordered. Okay, so I understand that the people picking out the items do not know if I am using hotdog buns with something else I already have, or something else in the order. But I have had times when I have ordered definite items that go together and maybe one is unavailable, but the other isn't. So, okay, make a decision on the smart side. Make a substitute. Today...brats...my size package is unavailable...make the substitution with a different size package or more to match the number in the original package which on this occasion was larger than the other possible substitutes. Okay, so it really is not such a big deal. Except that, as my mom would say, I have had my mouth set on brats in buns and having to fix something else just won't cut it. I am hungry and I want those brats. LOL So, okay, I did what I normally would not do. I called and complained. And I made a second order with the brats they could have substituted...and some chips just because. They best not come back and say those brats are also out of stock and just send me the chips. LOL Oh I will take the chips of course. But not worth the tip of the second delivery. Back to the lady on the phone saying that I can individually choose my substitutions. Well, I just checked, and the substitution options have again been fixed when nothing was broken. But I didn't know that when I placed the order. It does not change the fact that they should pick the items and send out those texts and emails within the time period given for making changes or additions to the order. I liked it best when they gave us that time to make our own choices of substitutions. They are not mind readers and should not make those substitutions for us. Like with that ham. Are they kidding????

That is frustrating, and you are very right. When they "fix" things it is never better. They have a system that is working perfectly, and for reasons known only to God they tinker with it and screw it up. It happens time after time. Same thing with the library..I was printing things there yesterday, and they changed the address of the printer. It took me like 10-15 minutes to get the right one. Why?? oh why?

Grocery stores regularly tend to rearrange the shelves which makes people frustrated trying to find things. I understand the marketing of that process. Give the customers time to remember where things are, then change it up so that they have to go find things all over again. Let them search and hopefully buy more than they originally wanted in the process. But some things get changed over and over again and for no logical reasons. Maybe it is sort of like the idea of keeping up with the Jones's. Oh look! That website changed something. We have to change that on our website now and make ours better than theirs. UGH. Just make things work right. And when it does, leave it alone.

@capirani The changes are NEVER better. If people aren't complaining .why "fix"it? Some selfish in management thinks it will be better for them I guess.

It is possible, in reguards to the ham, they tried to reach out. You never got the messages, so the driver had to guess. Ham is a popular item during the holiday season. If they were out of the ham you'd requested, other brands could've suffered the same. When it comes to relying on others, I've learned to roll with the punches. Work with the things I have avaible to me. Keep my expetations low and check the apps I use often so I don't have to deal with something, when it's crunch time. If it's THAT important, I'll find a way to get it in-person.

With any of the substitutions, they are supposed to substitute with like items. A whole ham and a single steak slice are nothing alike in my opinion. But in holidays they always have new and less experienced workers who can make mistakes. But even if I had gotten the message, I could not have done anything about it. I was just glad that I was not having a dinner that day and tried to serve several people with a single slice of ham. LOL

I ordered a Chicken Bacon Ranch sub from Walmart and had my taster set for that. I got an email saying that inventory was low and to pick a substitute. So I reluctantly picked a Turkey Cheddar sub. What I received was a Philly Cheese Steak. Sigh. Have a good day.
