Helping Mom with Constipation

In my previous post, I shared about my mother's difficulty with bowel movements. She hadn't been able to go for three days, which caused her severe abdominal pain. She thought it was due to the new medications her doctor prescribed, so she stopped taking them.
I went to the drugstore and bought medicine for constipation, but it didn't make it any easier for her to pass stool. She was writhing in pain whenever her stomach cramped, so I decided to feed her oatmeal. She ate nothing but oatmeal because she was afraid that eating anything else would worsen her stomach pain.
When we visited the doctor again, he said that her constipation wasn't caused by the medications. He prescribed some medicines to help her with bowel movements and mentioned that if her condition persisted, he would request a CT scan. We bought the medicines, and she started taking them, but she still couldn't go for another two days. So, I suggested reintroducing oatmeal into her diet. After that, she was able to pass stool again and resumed eating rice, fish, and vegetables. I advised her to always include oatmeal in her diet.

Just to make you feel better - my doctor says it is normall for seniors if it is four times a day or once in four days (lol)

It's funny how our bodies can vary so much. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks for the reassurance and the laugh!

Thank you, Sanna! Yes, she's doing much better now. The oatmeal seems to be her new best friend.
It's amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference. Have you or anyone you know ever had to deal with something like this?

It was interesting yesterday talking to the doctor that was substituting for my primary care physician. I have been having problems with abdominal pain, but not with passing stools or gas. That was one of the first things she asked about. I informed her that the stools were coming out fine and I was farting as good as Petey was. She wanted to know who "Petey" was and I explained that he is my orange tabby that passes gas that stinks so bad that he could have been used in the Gas Chambers when executions were the norm. She tried not to laugh, but it didn't work.
My problem has a different answer and I have to go through more testing, but I have to include more veggies and dairy into my diet. That won't be too difficult as I love both, but there are a few things that are a bit more difficult to adjust to. One of which is a new medication to control my nausea. I will say that being plugged at the south end of your body is far from fun. I remember when my brother was really plugged and hadn't pooped for over a week. My parents finally gave him something to pass the stool, and he did. It was awesome, I was called in to view it to see what happens when you don't eat properly and do everything your parents tell you to do. The end result was over 2 feet long and my father had to get a stick and break it into pieces so it could be flushed down the toilet. I remember telling my Mom that if it doesn't go down he'll have to get a bucket and a large slotted spoon. It flushed.
One thing, the CT scan isn't painful, but the contrast they use tastes awful. I know from experience as I had one a week ago Friday.
I hope your Mom feels much better now, and along with the oatmeal she might also add pineapple in her diet. It is a great "mover", at least it has been for me. Hug your Mom for me and my spoiled brat cats.

Toni, your story made me laugh out loud! Petey sounds like quite the character!
It's great that you have such a positive attitude despite the challenges. Adding more veggies and dairy sounds like a good plan. I'm glad to hear you don't have issues with passing stools, but I hope your abdominal pain gets resolved soon. Thank you for the tip about pineapple. I’ll definitely suggest it to my mom. Sending hugs to you and your spoiled brat cats!

Constipation happens to me too after some treatment procedures so I take psyllium as needed. It's like juice and there is also a tablet form. You can also try giving her saluyot leaves , it helps and of course papaya is also good. Bananas would not be advisable this time.

This is really painful. After medication treatment and dietary control, the situation has been alleviated, which is worth celebrating. I hope your mother can recover her health as soon as possible
