Day 162 – Dwelling Place
Numbers 32:1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock, 2 the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon, 4 the country which JEHOVAH defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”
5 Therefore, they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan.”
6 Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, “Will your brethren go to war while you sit here? 7 Why will you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which JEHOVAH has given them? 8 Thus, your fathers did when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9 For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which JEHOVAH had given them. 10 JEHOVAH’S anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying, 11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, will see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me, 12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’ 13 JEHOVAH’S anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation that had done evil in the sight of JEHOVAH was gone. 14 And look! You have risen in your father’s place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of JEHOVAH against Israel. 15 For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy these people.”
16 Then they came near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17 but we ourselves will be armed, ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our homes until every one of the children of Israel has received his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan.”
20 Then Moses said to them, “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before JEHOVAH for the war, 21 and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before JEHOVAH until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, 22 and the land is subdued before JEHOVAH, then afterward you may return and be blameless before JEHOVAH and before Israel; and this land will be your possession before JEHOVAH. 23 But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against JEHOVAH; and be certain your sin will find you out. 24 Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep and do what proceeded out of your mouth.”
25 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead; 27 but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before JEHOVAH to battle, just as my lord says.”
28 Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 Moses said to them, "If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before JEHOVAH, and the land is subdued before you, then you will give them the land of Gilead as a possession. 30 But if they do not cross over armed with you, they will have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
31 Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As JEHOVAH has said to your servants, so we will do. 32 We will cross over armed before JEHOVAH into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance will remain with us on this side of the Jordan.”
33 Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country.
34 The children of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 35 Atroth, Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 36 Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
37 The children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kirjathaim, 38 Nebo, Baal Meon (their names being changed), and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.
39 The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.
40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it. 41 Also Jair, the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns and called them Havoth Jair. 42 Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.
God’s name:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
Yeshuwa – Jesus
Theos – Supreme Divinity
Kurios – Supreme Authority
God’s character:
Provider
Did you make plans to move to a certain location, yet when you started your journey to the new location, you found a better place to build your new life?
The leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben approached Moses with a proposal to take possession of the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan. Moses told them their proposal would anger JEHOVAH. However, they proposed to build cities for their children and livestock and cross over the Jordan with their fellow tribesmen, armed for war. They would lead them over Jordan and fight with them until they took their possession. Moses agreed on condition that they did what they said they would do.
When you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord, you committed to go where He led you, and live where He purposed for you. However, Yeshuwa is not unreasonable. If you set out to do His will and find a much better place to build the kingdom of JEHOVAH, He will listen to your proposition and validate it when He sees the intentions of your heart honor Him. He will even pave the way so that everything you do prospers.
Will your actions take Him by surprise? Will He argue with you? No. He knew from the foundation of the world what you would do, when, and why. He wrote every day of your life in His book.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says JEHOVAH, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and hope.
Psalm 139:15 My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. In Your book they were written, the days fashioned for me, when yet there were none of them.
Acts 17:24 “Theos, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Kurios of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek Kurios, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’
He knows what you will do before you do it, and your requests before you ask them. JEHOVAH will go before you, defeating your enemies, to bring you into your place of rest.
Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to come short of it.
2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
3 For we who believed do enter that rest, as He has said, “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They will not enter My rest,’” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “Theos rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this place: “They will not enter My rest.”
6 Since, therefore, it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.
9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of Theos.
10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as Theos did from His.
11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
JEHOVAH knows your heart. He will listen to you and provide a way for you to obtain your desire because it honors Him.
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for knowing the end from the beginning, for writing every day of my life in Your book. Let my heart always honor You in everything I say and do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
