Day 180 – Clean and Unclean Deuteronomy 14:1 “You are the children of JEHOVAH your Elohiym; you will not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead. 2 For you are a holy people to JEHOVAH your Elohiym, and JEHOVAH chose you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above every people on the face of the earth. 3 “You will not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the mountain goat, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. 6 You may eat every animal with cloven hooves, having the hoof split into two parts, and chews the cud, among the animals. 7 Nevertheless, of those that chew the cud or have cloven hooves, you will not eat, such as these: the camel, the hare, and the rock hyrax; for they chew the cud but do not have cloven hooves; they are unclean for you. 8 Also, the swine is unclean for you, because it has cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud; you will not eat their flesh or touch their dead carcasses. 9 These you may eat of everything in the waters: you may eat everything with fins and scales. 10 Whatever does not have fins and scales you will not eat; it is unclean for you. 11 You may eat clean birds. 12 These you will not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard, 13 the red kite, the falcon, and the kite after their kinds; 14 every raven after its kind; 15 the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the seagull, and the hawk after their kinds; 16 the little owl, the screech owl, the white owl, 17 the jackdaw, the carrion vulture, the fisher owl, 18 the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe and the bat. 19 Also, every creeping thing that flies are unclean for you; they will not be eaten. 20 You may eat clean birds. 21 You will not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to the alien within your gates, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; for you are a holy people to JEHOVAH your Elohiym. You will not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. 22 “You will tithe the increase of your grain the field produces year by year. 23 You will eat before JEHOVAH your Elohiym, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, so that you may learn to fear JEHOVAH your Elohiym always. 24 If the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where JEHOVAH your Elohiym chooses to put His name is too far from you, when JEHOVAH your Elohiym blessed you, 25 then you will exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which JEHOVAH your Elohiym chooses. 26 You will spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you will eat there before JEHOVAH your Elohiym, and you will rejoice, you and your household. 27 “You will not forsake the Levite within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you. 28 At the end of every third year you will bring out the tithe of your produce for that year and store it up within your gates. 29 The Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, so that JEHOVAH your Elohiym may bless you in the work of your hand which you do. God’s names: JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal Elohiym – Supreme God Yeshuwa – Jesus Theos – Supreme Divinity Kurios – Supreme Authority, Lord Hagios – Sacred, Holy Pneuma – Breath, Spirit God’s character: Holy Today, people eat whatever they like. They don’t consider how it came to the store and the process it took so it would be edible. They only know what they like and purchase it. People who want to eat healthy look into the health benefits of the meat and produce they purchase to get the most out of what they eat. Moses told Israel what JEHOVAH required of them regarding the food they ate, and even where they ate it. He told them they couldn’t eat certain foods because they were unclean. However, Moses told them it was all right for strangers to eat those foods. He told them they were special people, set apart for JEHOVAH. They were to keep themselves clean in every way, even when it came to how they approached dead people. Moses also told the people they were to set apart the tithe for the Levites, stranger, fatherless, and widow. They were to store their tithe for three years and give it to them so they would have enough to eat for the following three years. When you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord, you learned the dietary laws JEHOVAH gave Israel no longer applied as Elohiym gave permission to eat whatever people put in front of them. Acts 10:1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 a devout man and one who feared Theos with his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to Theos always. 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw in a vision an angel of Theos coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” 4 When he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, Kurios?” He said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before Theos. 5 Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” 7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. 8 When he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 A voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 Peter said, “Not so, Kurios! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” 15 A voice spoke to him again the second time, “What Theos cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. Then the object was taken up into heaven again. You are no longer under obligation to eat only specific foods as Elohiym told His people they could and could not eat. When Yeshuwa told His disciples to go into the world and make disciples of every nation, He also provided food for them to eat. They would need to eat the same food as the people they witnessed to. If they did not, the people would not have accepted the gospel and would feel it wasn’t for them. It is the same for you. When you witness to people, you need to adhere to their customs and the food they eat. When you do, you show the people you are no different from them and they will accept the gospel easier than if you stood apart from them. A question came up regarding what the law said about food and how they witnessed to people. After consideration they told Paul what they agreed upon. Acts 15:22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren. 23 They wrote this letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law” —to whom we gave no such commandment— 25 it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We, therefore, sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Hagios Pneuma, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell. 1 Corinthians 10:25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; 26 for “the earth is Kurios’s, and its fullness.” 27 If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’s sake. You are no longer bound by the Law in the food you eat. Do not offend your host by declining to eat the food they offer you. Let’s pray: Father, help me to be a witness of You and the gospel to the people You send me. Let me not offend them by word or deed. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. It is important to ask for blessing on the food before we eat it.
