Not Just the Eye of the Beholder

Some old friends and I were looking over our High School Year Book, sharing memories. We recalled Yvonne as the virtual Queen. "She's ugly!" exclaimed Judy who hadn't attended that School. We stared at the photo. Judy was right. There was nothing in anyway special about Yvonne. She had a fancy hairstyle, wore makeup, acted as the Queen, but really wasn't attractive. Each of us had been cowed by Yvonne. We asked Judy to look over the photos and pick out the most beautiful girl. She went through them and pointed to Sherika. We barely recalled her, she had been very much on the periphery. Yet she was beautiful. How was it we could have looked up to Yvonne and scarcely recalled Sherika. "Presentation," said Annie. We realised that we saw people, maybe still see people, as how they want to be seen.

You were looking for something else during that time. Sherika's beauty might not be up to your standards back then but she got your attention because somebody pointed it out and you made that second look.

she was so shy and kept to herself that we didn't see her. It is not that our views had changed, it was her preentation

There are indeed a lot of memories in the school yearbook, I also sometimes like to open the old book, I can see photos of old friends
