I've done some drawing today.

My drawing of a boat.

As I wasn't doing any painting today, I decided to just do some drawing instead while sitting on the sofa. I got out the Leisure Painter magazine that I got from the big Tesco yesterday, and I turned to the page where it told you how to draw boats. It told you how to draw boats, and then afterwards there was a painting demonstration of 3 boats on a beach. I read through how to draw the boats, but not the painting demonstration as I wouldn't be doing any painting today. After I'd read through how to draw boats, I went and got out one of my sketch books and a photo of my own of a boat that I got off the copyright free pictures site on the internet. They showed you how to draw 3 boats with various amounts of the inside showing. First of all they told you to draw a flattened figure 8. The more of the inside is showing, the bigger one side of the figure 8. Then on one side of the figure 8 you draw the angle of the prow. Then you draw a line from that to the stern, ofcause making sure it follows the shape of the boat. Then draw a line at the top. I got out my pencil and practised my first boat. But then the graphite in my pencil was loose. I sharpened my pencil, but how come every time I sharpen my pencils, the graphite breaks? I had 3 bits of graphite at one point which had broken off my pencil! Then I remembered somebody said you should sharpen your pencils with a craft knife, so I went to look in my tool box to see if I had one. I found some blades and a handle that I thought they went in, but the blade was too loose in it and it fell on the floor! So then I was searching for that for ages using Mum's torch! I did eventually find it, thank goodness, because I didn't want to go standing on it! I went and had another look in another tool box, and I found 3 more craft knives. They all had different sized blades. There was a small one with a tiny blade, one with a blade that was a little bit better, and a retractable blade with a larger blade. I tried sharpening my pencil with the retractable craft knife, but it was loose and kept going back in. It was then that I discovered the locking mechanism! So then with the blade secure, I tried again. But it still didn't work. Eventually I gave up and put my craft knives away! I got out a different pencil and used that! So I practised the other 2 boats, and I did the third one again, slightly larger. Then I turned over the page in my sketch book, and used the whole page to draw the boat from my picture. (See picture above.) (All my other practise pieces were drawn on the same page.) I started with the flattened figure 8 like in my practice pieces, then drew in my prow. I drew the bottom of the boat to the stern. Then I realised that in my picture, the boat looks very square. So I used the figure 8 as a guide to put in the straight lines of the inside of the boat. Then I rubbed out my guide lines. I started drawing in the buoys around the outside of the boat. But when I came to the last buoy, that looks like it's sticking out from the end of the boat, I realised my boat was too long as the buoy didn't reach the end. So I drew in where the end of the boat should be, and rubbed out the excess. Then when I drew the last buoy it was in the right position. Then I realised that the stern of the boat was almost on the horizontal, whereas in my drawing it was slanting too much! So I drew where the stern should be, and then rubbed out the bit where it was wrong. Then I drew in the planks of wood on the boat, then I drew the inside of the boat where the seat is. Then I realised the seat in my picture was too deep, and to make it look better the edge of the boat should be higher! But I'd nearly finished then and I thought, no, I'm not rubbing any more out! It can stay like that! So then I put my things away and came onto here to tell you! What have you lot been getting up to today? I hope you are well. Have a nice day.

I hope you have success with that. You do know that anyone can learn to draw and paint, don't you? You just need to know the tricks of the trade. It's like learning the piano, nobody is born knowing how to do it.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you think so. Anyone can learn how to sketch you just have to know the tricks of the trade. That sounds like fun!

@sharonelton That is a nice looking boat. I’ve spent the afternoon making a truly delicious tomato and basil sauce to go with pasta tonight.

Did you have a good tutor? Anyone can learn to draw, you just need to know the tricks of the trade.

That's a nice drawing. Nothing much going on today. Just went to the supermarket to buy some kiwi fruits.
