Visting new places offers us to get to new experiences and break away from our routine life. It gives us an opportunity to connect with different cultures, traditions and cuisines. In short, it is a rewarding experience. Most of us would remember countries by their iconic landmarks or popular destinations. And hence, we would have an interest to see these places or landmarks in person. Most of the times, tourist infrastructure is well developed around these areas. Popular landmarks or places often translates to larger crowds, higher prices and other related challenges. Less explored and unknown places could bring a sense of adventure and discovery. There could be hidden gems and often higher chances to connect with local culture in a more authentic manner. It could as well be more peaceful and personal experience. So, what would you like to do – visit a popular holiday destination or visit a less explore and unknown place?

“Everybody” loves Disney World or all the amusement parks in Florida. When I went to Florida two years ago I went to eleven different state parks…never saw anything but a sign for the amusement parks. I had, in my opinion, much more fun and spent a third of the money. I do enjoy popular natural places (Niagara Falls is a good example), because they’re popular for a reason. The amusement parks, though, aren’t my style anymore.

@Scarred4Lyfe — I’ve seen that amusement park and “bold and stark” are not two words I’d associate with it. “Crappy and dilapidated”…but that doesn’t fit the meter or the rhyme pattern of the song….

I would like to visit iconic landmarks better than seeing new places since I like to visit a landmark that I am familiar with.

My preference is for the later one - the less explored ones. Yet within one's limits & not putting oneself to too much of a danger.

I would like a little of both. I would want to see the iconic destinations but take it in through the lens of the less explored regions.

I have been to both popular and the less explored ones. I would prefer the second one more. Last month we went trekking to a temple here on the outskirts. It's less explored and the experience was really good.

@RevivedWarrior Very true. I do everything to avoid rush and crowd for any vacation. So, even when we plan for popular destinations, I would choose some off days and off seasons. I like a slow down and peaceful vacation. So, I don't keep so many things on my to do list when I go for vacation.

It really depends on what kind of travel experience you're after. I am for both. Popular sights are popular for a reason, and so you wouldn't want to miss that for yourself, while unexplored ones are often where you find those unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences that make travel so special. For me, both are rewarding—just in different ways. Each brings its own kind of rewarding feeling!
