Anyone raise Chickens?

So I am now trying to convince my husband to let me have chickens. I really like eggs and with the price I can't see why I shouldn't have just a few chickens. I don't really want like twenty chicks but maybe four or six. My friend just went and got 12 chicks and is now looking at coops. So naturally I want to go play with them lol. It really got me researching it though. It's something that we've been talking about for a year or two but never really wanted to take the huge step. Now we're really considering it. Maybe even adding a duck or two. Maybe even a turkey. The possibilities are endless lol. We're settling the cats first so right now all it is, is research. This will be the last move for the cats and I'm really happy about this move. Their new home will be here next week then with a few odds and ends they'll be set. After that though we'll decide on the chickens. The first step is to decide if they will be able to go with us if we move. Just like we have to make sure when the time comes we can take the cats. It's a lot to think about and with as much as we're doing, the goal is to get our own place. Does anyone here raise chickens or any other poultry? Any tips would be great :)

I raise chickens and getting them as chicks is the least expensive way. If you just want eggs, purchase all pullets. You pay a little more, but don't have to put up with roosters crowing in the mornings or night. And don't have to worry about their aggressiveness in the Spring when hormones go wild.

@JordanLader Are you going to buy from a local breeder, order through mail or local Tractor Supply, feed store, etc.?

That's pretty much what I want. I really do not want to have to deal with a rooster. That was one thing I was trying to avoid

@kareng Tractor Supply. My plan is to well, plan this year lol so that next year I can buy everything at once. The coop, the warmer, food, water bowl, just everything. Pretty sure it's too big a venture for this year so it's all about the learning right now.

Check out the prices of chicken feed before you decide. Just a thought.

She can feed 5-6 for $15 or less for a month. Laying pellets are cheaper at most co-ops vs. TS. @JordanLader

@kareng I didn't think of our co-op. It's tucked away and I forget about it. I guess I was also kind of comparing it to our other animals. Honestly compared to my others, the chickens are cheaper lol.

I'm sure it would be rewarding to have chickens. I wanted to raise some myself but just didn't have a backyard.

@MNRFOLEY Thank you! As of right now we have a good start. I have money in our savings account for the first time in like six months lol

We have more than enough space. When we move...if we can ever get to that point, most houses we've looked at can handle everything I want to do.

@jordanlader I was brought up with chickens and ducks who were totally free range and many used to come into the house to lay eggs. One in particular laid on top of my wardrobe.

Oh wow. I can't do free range like that. Too many other animals and I'd always worry.

my mother used to do it but, you know, some chickens not survive so you must be prepared for all. and all those vitamins for them. wish you luck, of course.

That's most animals. I'm extremely lucky that all of my cats have made it as they're completely outside cats and kept in a pen. I can't do the free range thing because I just love them too much for something to happen.

We don't really have neighbors out here unless you count the graveyard lol and when we look at houses we look at areas that have a decent amount of land. We don't need a whole lot just enough to keep my animals from bugging people and have some space of our own. People keep looking at 5 and higher acres and I really just want one or two lol. Two would be great to add a small garden.
