Is social media helping or harming society?

We have seen the role of the social media in various moods so far. They are there to educate us as well as to spread fake news too. Only that part of the news is shown that's in someone's particular favor. So does social media is of any help to us or are they harming us in any way?

I dont really do social media any more. It's good for some people not for others. What is posted and shared on social media can harm people, that much is true.

Yes, what's posted there can definitely harm people. It can harm to the extent of their life getting over in unfortunate turn of events. But then, remember it's the social media that made it all happen and it was due to those platforms that we could know what's true and what's not. I personally feel that social media is a platform to weed out the fake from the true ones.

@Ineeddentures True. But as far as the AI thing is concerned, it's more to do with visuals like images and videos. But that's not the case with news. News can be traced to be trustworthy or fake by sources like word of mouth. Or we can know it's authenticity by virtue of some past things and history. But it's really tough with images and videos.

@abhi_bangal What with AI it's becoming more and more difficult to know what is fake or not.

@jaylar That's really very tragic, right. And what I mentioned is a real case that took place just around one year back in India. And it wasn't very far from our place. Two poor souls lost their lives just because of a group of people believing in a fake news and identifying those two people to be someone from terrorist links or something similar. But actually they were just innocent people like you and me.

@abhi_bangal the internet has made nonsense far more infectious than before. There was a similiar stupidity in my country where the idiots were made to believe something that wasn't near fact.

I think of it the same way we view money. Many say that money is the root of all evil, but I believe it depends on how you use it—your intentions and how you utilize it will determine whether it harms society or not. Social media has a similar effect; its impact depends on how we choose to use the power it holds in our lives. You can use it to spread fake news, or you can use it to promote the truth and advocate for it. Social media itself remains neutral in all of this—it is up to us to decide how we take advantage of it.

One needs to be discerning while accepting or rejecting what one gets to see in socia media Having said that it depends who spreads it

But I will say that it's due to the social media that we get to know that a particular news is false. Hadn't it been for the social media, we would never have known that. Just my personal thoughts.

@allknowing Very right. Truly said. The more vigilant we are, the better for us. Because it can avoid a lot of trouble for ourselves and also for the society where we live.

I like social media. I've made many friends here and on other sites.

Oh wow... That's so great to know that you have become online friends. Now I can say that you may not have met a lot of them in person. But that's always a great feeling to know that there are social friends. I'm not aware of other sites that cater to being online friends. But after all, it's your approach and how you deal with other people, which goes on to make them your friends. Here, you doesn't refer to you particularly. It can be just about anyone

@LindaOHio Ohhhh, that's great. It's always very fascinating to meet an online friend. I think you said you met one of the friends there... I suspect you both come from the same place. Just assuming because it's easier for two people living in the same region to travel and meet, instead of like us who are living thousands of miles away. As far as I am concerned, I too have dozens of online friends. But I have managed to meet only one of them. And it's me who had flown making a 2 hour journey.

Do not be gullible and I guess social media is beneficial.

That's the last thing I'll ever be - being gullible. I mean, I know that it's very easy to get driven away in the storm of fake news on the social platform. But yes, I totally agree with you that it's beneficial. I can say this from personal experience. I have got to learn and know a lot of new things, especially from my own culture. That's so awful to know that our culture's past has come forward through this means. I mean, doesn't look good. There should have been someone from "inside". That's why I feel that social media should be there.

@Yadah04 That's correct. There's still so much to be explored. And we people agree doing what? Playing blame games, pointing fingers, and defaming the good Samaritans. This is how social media is being used? It's a sorry state in that case.

@abhi_bangal that’s true, social media should be there to “see” and inform things.

For me, I believe that social media can be a great help for most of us. Some are using it for communication, entertainment, learning and even earning. Just like any other things, too much of it can harm us. With regards to absorbing information, we should take extra precautions so as to avoid fake news. Just like taking information offline, we should verify the sources of the information.

I'm sure there are many of us here who feel that the social media has helped them in one way or the other. This applies to me too. But I can't put up those illustrations here. They are a bit personal. But the gist of the matter is that I've seen those things that might be never be seen without messaging apps. I've got to know a few bits of information on my culture and a bit about the history of my country that never came to light as a student. To me, it's more about entertainment and learning, of course, apart communication.
