First, I am glad I no longer drink alcohol. But I have friends, relatives and even clients who still drink. In an operation by a consortium of authorized wines and spirit manufacturers discovered that at least 60% of liquor in liquor stores of major towns including the capital city Nairobi are contraband. There is a cartel of illegal manufacturers of liquor who produce and sell liquor packaged under the legal manufacturers’ packaging and branding. Sadly, the fake liquor has high levels of ethanol and has very bad effects on stomach lining and liver. It is unfortunate that the government is yet to carry out a crackdown to flush out the illegal manufacturers.
