My grandfather was a committed Christian. although he never did mission work, one of his son's did, my Uncle David. On one of his trips to Africa he helped the locals build a chapel. It is named for my grandfather. I told my dad that I think grandpa would have liked it. This was after his death I believe. He agreed with me, and thought it was a nice rememberance. Is there anything around named for any of your relatives? Sometimes parks are named for people, bridges etc.?

That is a very fitting and sweet remembrance of your uncle.
After my Dad passed away, the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, which he belonged to, donate a chalice in his memory with his name engraved on it. The parish that my parents belonged to did not need another chalice, but my uncle, who was a catholic priest, and went to Guatemala twice a year, helping to develop a little village and said mass while he was there, suggested that they could use a new chalice. He suggested that when we order it not to choose a marble one, as they are very heavy, but to go with white gold or yellow gold. Which is what we did, and the K of C's paid for it. There was a dedication service where I had to attend with my mother. She wasn't able to speak, but asked me to thank them, and advise them that the chalice would be well used by the parish in Guatemala. And although my Dad was never there, his name is very well known.

That is SO cool! And what a meaningful remembrance. There is a street named after my mom. My great grandfather was at one time involved in the process of getting people to build the streets, and he got to name a few. He named one Melinda, and one Leanne (my mom). Those were his granddaughters. Also, a lady in our church named their adopted daughter (this was about 8 years ago) after my mom. I remember my dad telling my grandmother that and she cried. It was really a lovely gesture. My mom had been principal when the lady in our church was young, and made a way for her to learn sign language when she had really wanted to learn, and the school had no classes. She had also been her Sunday school teacher. Now, the lady in a sign language interpreter for the state.

There are things named for family members as well in Somerset County PA..close to the Maryland border, as my great grandmother hailed from there.
