Grandkids and their lovable ways

I'm sometimes at a loss for how to deal with my 3-year-old male grandkid when he hurts his younger female sibling (8-mos. old), unintentionally and intentionally. I wanted to give him a slight smack so he knows it is not right, but it might give him the idea that hurting people is expected behavior. How do you deal with kids who behave this way? Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

Why not talk him and explain it to him that hurting isn't good.

Will he be able to understand? When I explain it to him, he shouts all the more and strikes once again with his hands.

@Jenaisle Do you come across with the words of wisdom of a writer Dorithy Nolte on's "Children learn what they live"

That's a very natural response. Sibling rivalry is so common. His emotions are to be acknowledged and not judged. His behavior has to be dealt in a very tricky way and very gently.

Yes, it is tricky to come up with a way to assure him that he is still loved.

@arunima25 I will try that, thanks for the suggestions. I can almost see the kid brother getting excited about it.

@Jenaisle My daughters are just two and half years apart and I have actually gone through thar. Slowly involving the elder one in taking care of the younger sibling helps. Children enjoy getting the responsibility. I remember involving my elder one in all decisions like choosing cloth for the baby to wear after bath, shopping for her baby sister, applying soap on her tummy when we gave her bath in her baby tub. These gentle approaches might work.

Aside from explaining it to him, maybe he needs a time out.

Bringing the children on the way of the lord is something that is highly recommended for the truth of the matter. That is the only way to avoid misfortunes in children
