I Saw a Lion Today

I still can’t believe it happened.
Today, while I was out walking near the edge of town—where the road starts turning into open land and scrub—I saw a lion. A real lion. Not in a zoo, not in a safari park. Out there. In the wild. Alone.
I had taken a different route, just wanting some peace and quiet. There was a stretch of tall grass and scattered trees, nothing unusual. Then I noticed everything had gone oddly quiet—no birds, no rustling. Just stillness.
And that’s when I saw it.
At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. But there it was, about fifty feet away, standing partly behind a bush. Huge. Muscular. The mane was thick and golden, moving slightly in the wind. It wasn’t doing anything aggressive—just standing there, watching me.
For a second, my brain couldn’t even process it. A lion? Here?
I didn’t move. Not even a breath. I wasn’t sure if I was in danger or just witnessing something once-in-a-lifetime. It looked at me, not with anger, not with fear, but with this calm intensity—like it knew I didn’t belong there, but it wasn’t threatened either.
We held eye contact for a few seconds. Then, without any sound, it turned and walked away into the grass. Just… gone.
I stood there frozen. Heart pounding. Mouth dry. Every logical part of me was screaming questions: Where did it come from? Is it escaped from somewhere? Did anyone else see it?

on top of my house a weasel usually walk around the roof at night. it isn't dangerous, i don't think, so one was scared. I don't live near the wood, so nothing to be scared at all.

that must have been exciting. California has cougars, so people do see them here too.
