All students must provide social media accounts to get USA student visa

June 19, 2025 2:12am CST
Its a good news that after few months of ban, president trump has lifted sanctions on student visa applications to the United States of America. In this case, all students are expected to unlock their social media accounts and provide visa interviewers access to such. Does anyone think this is a sensible thing to do?

Not sure. Access to social media is violating the privacy. I am sure many would not be comfortable. The recent developments there in the US has definitely tarnished US image for foreign students. It won't fade away so easily. Students are preferring other countries over the US.

@jaylar The recent incidents of misbehavior with foreign students is concerning and even shameful. Students have not gone there on charity. They pay fees and American universities earn a lot from them.

they are wise to do so. One goes to University for an education not to be part of some social tsunami

Our local University is attracting people from other nations. We are not that excited to go to the US.. we'll pick England or Canada instead

@ogbenishyna44 my view is that he is pleasing Putin by eroding America's standing in the world. Objectively, no nation should rely on another to the extent the world relied on the US. Look at Africa which depended on USAID

My granddaughter had everything ready to go to the US to study. She first studied here and then went twice for a year to Spain for apostgrade. But after what Trump has done (banned and then lifted bans ) she has decided to study in another country. The US seems too dangerous. Things can change any moment.

@ogbenishyna44 I used to go often to the US. Now I don´t dare. It is not enough to restore anything. Trump can restore something one day and change the order the next day. We the people of other countries will prefer maybe to wait until Trump and people like him don´t have the power.

That is new to me. Giving access to your social media is not a good thing. It’s violating the privacy.

for many years employers have checked applicants social media pages. I can think of a man who applied for a position at a legal firm who was rejected because of the photos he posted on FB. It isn't shocking that one would delve into the social media of students.

@ogbenishyna44 but it shows he doesn't have the acumen required for such a position
