Is global communication under threat?

In one of recent reports, it was mentioned that China has a cable-cutter "weapon" and that it has the ability to close down as much as 95% of global communications. This cable cutter can be used under seawater and has a precision even in darkness. Is that really true? Is the entire world so much dependent that China's one move can disturb that huge amount of communication in the entire world? How is it possible that such a huge amount of communication went in China's hands and there's just 5% left untouched by China? We used to come across discussions and thoughts like can you stay without internet and mobile phones for one day, for one week, or for one month. But if something like this happens there'd be no need to ask such a question

I think that most of this is speculation and scaremongering by the Anti Chinese Lobby I read about this on Newsweek, So not sure if it is true or not It could be, but whether or not China would use it is a bit doubtfull

"I read about this on News week, So not sure if it is true or not". Why so? Aren't news on Newsweek trustworthy? I am also doubtful if China would really use this even if they control that much amount of communication volume in the world. It is like you can draw parallel conclusions regarding the Russia Ukraine war. Even when the war is going on for months now, Putin hasn't yet used a nuclear bomb.

@Ineeddentures I wasn't aware that Newsweek is biased. And it's not the first neither the last to be biased in their opinion. And in that case, it's always good to go through multiple sources.

@abhi_bangal Newsweek , well , they tend to be bias towards the Right , use loaded language , I would need to read another report on the same subject , from another source and compare the rhetoric

Oh! Sounds scary! That would be a terrible thing to do, but then you never know. The way things are going around the world anything is possible. People and countries can behave irresponsibly with their myopic vision of consequences. I am sure thar China too would be impacted too in a bad way. Anyways, first thing is to find out the truth and authenticity of the news. Fake news get viral easily and faster than the real ones.

Exactly. Fake news have stronger and more legs and runs faster. That is why I didn't share the link here because even I wasn't sure if anything like this is really possible. Another thing is that I didn't do research about underwater sea communication percentage volume. Speaking about the 95% of sea water communication that China holds, looks to be an responsible number. Because there are other developing and developed countries who will never allow such a thing to happen. But yes like individuals we have even seen countries behaving in an irresponsible manner. That is why any step that we think shouldn't have been taken, but a country takes, should not surprise us these days.

@arunima25 Right there. But suppose, even if any country head is short tempered, and is engaged in a war with some other nation, still he doesn't use a nuclear bomb. It's like that I think. China won't so soon bring people into so huge problems.

I just happened to read about the news just a couple of days back. Yes this would really be a bad news for all of us. And I also I am hopeful that this doesn't come true. Yes it indeed feels scary to even think about what we just talked about.

I hope it doesn't happen the way it's showed. Otherwise it'll be very difficult for all of us.
