We Had "The Talk" With The Mother In Law

It was definitely time to have "the talk" with the mother-in-law. Hubby let her ramble and rant and talk incessantly (and lie) before he started his spiel. He told her he loved her and that he was concerned about her. He told her that we'd being trying for several years to get her to consider moving into an independent living apartment on a facility that also offers assisted living, personal care, skilled nursing, memory care, etc. He explained to her that she would start out in just a regular apartment and that as needed would progress through different levels of care. He told her she was slipping very noticeably and he gave her several examples. He explained that we weren't trying to put her in an old folks home but that he was deeply concerned for her and he strongly suggested she consider it. She told him she didn't remember him ever bringing up the Masonic Home before. Then she abruptly changed the subject multiple times (manipulation) to stories where she was the victim (the dirty old man, the removal of a handicapped parking spot near her apartment, etc. etc.) and on and on it went. Then she said that when hubby and I take her to lunch we leave her sitting there eating her lunch and only talk to each other and walk out and leave her there. None of that is true. Even though we told her we have everything she needs to apply for the Masonic Home apartment and would take her there and get it done, she defers to the millionaire family friend and won't let us do it. She secretly hopes the millionaire family friend will buy her an expensive condo with a garage and let her live there for free until she dies, as she puts it, "it would be an investment property for him." So nothing changed.

It’s too bad the brother couldn’t have backed you guys up with all that. Not that she would have been better behaved.

You've done what you could. I guess now it is a waiting game. Maybe you could talk her into at least touring it..or brother could.

You might need to take it to court and have her declared incompetent.

That's a pity but not surprising. My in-laws were the same way. They wanted to stay in their home.

What's that? A drama in real life? An empty promises?
