My Mobile is not getting charged

When I saw the mobile was off I kept it for charging. The charger is on but the mobile seems dead.
I really do not know what could be wrong If it is the battery I will have to get a new one
We have a mobile shop close by I will send my maid there and hopefully the problem will be sorted out.
I am expecting some important calls and only hope my mobile will start working again.
Keeping fingers crossed.
