Louisville is Under an Areal Flood Warning

United States

Whenever I had heard that term before I thought they were saying "aerial" flood warning and I couldn't figure out how it was going to flood the air. But then I researched and it's Areal Flood Warning. An Areal Flood Warning means water rises potentially over low lying areas, some roads and when smaller creeks. It's a gradual rising of water. We have had three huge downpours here in the last two hours. Roads could get covered with water from rain. Just in case you wanted to know more, there are two additional more severe types of flood warnings. River Flood Warnings are issued when a river is predicted to at least reach flood stage, which generally takes a few days after heavy rain. Flash Flood Warnings, like those in Texas and a few other states last week and this week are flooding that happens when a large amount of rain comes down in a very short time period. Any flooding going on where you live?

We had a flash flood warning last week, but we have those a lot. Usually, it’s not a terrible flood unless a tornado is attached to the storm. At least, here.

The only flooding we had was quite a few years ago when we had 12" of rain. It was declared a disaster area and we got a check from FEMA for the furnace and hot water heater repairs.

We are lucky we live half a block from the Halifax River but even during torrential rain storms our street has never become a river itself. However, there have been other areas here that have flooded,
