Who did NOT see this song coming? I blasted this as I drove to the Route 66 tourist stop yesterday, and for quite a while after I left. Yes, the reason a lot of people went there in the 80s was because of this song. Put a pin in the map with this rocker. Cadillac Ranch - Bruce Springsteen The concept of the Cadillac Ranch is celebrating the Caddy. It was the gold standard of luxury for decades (“through the years” information at the Route 66 museums had the price of Cadillacs at $3,500 while other cars were under $1,000, to give you an indication). That’s sadly not true anymore. In fact, if you want some of those “best and worst cars” countdowns a Cadillac will inevitably show up in the “worst” list. But this song is more about the joy of the open road (“James Dean in that Mercury ‘49, Junior Johnson [NASCAR racer and connection to the true origins of NASCAR: he ran his daddy’s moonshine] runnin’ through the woods of Caroline, even Burt Reynolds in that black Trans-Am”). And this song is definitely roll down the windows, crank up the stereo, and hope there aren’t any cops around good. Of course, the speed limit in Texas is 75 now, so… Cadillac Ranch Written by Bruce Springsteen Recorded by Bruce Springsteen From The River, 1980 Drive me to the junk yard:
