Bottlegourd is called lau in bengali. In hindi it is called lauki. There are two varieties of bottlegourds. One are the long ones which look cylindrical. The other ones are round in shape. They are cut into small pieces boiled and a curry is made with potatoes. They are eaten with rice.

Here in Venezuela we grow round varieties, basically you throw a seed in any soil and they simply sprout. We have pumpkin all year round and it is one of the most economical vegetables that can be found here. It is also used to increase anemia and hemoglobin levels.
