Every one have many definiton which with special friend and boy /girl friend.
For me ;
Special friend is a friend that can be sharing about anything such as suggestion, opinion, and each other.
Girl Friend is a girl or young woman with whom a man is romantically involved.

Those seem to be rather technical definitions. A boyfriend/girlfriend is one of a thousand different things. I mean, even someone you fool around with may to some extent be a girlfriend/boyfriend. I usually keep that title for someone more intimate though. A special friend is like you said, just someone to listen.
