$798 for One Boot

United States

It's crazy. My podiatrist billed my health insurance company $798 for that walking cast boot that I'm wearing for my fractured foot. What kind of "boot" is worth $798? My share of that is going to be $238 which if I had known ahead of time I would have declined the boot and just kept walking in my tennis shoes. To make matters worse, the boot is actually hurting my leg, making it worse.

Yep, ten years ago when I broke my ankle, I got a bill for that boot for $350 (ten years ago it was a heck of a lot cheaper!). Only my insurance wouldn’t cover one bit of it because they said it wasn’t a medical necessity. Which seemed to be in contrast to my doctor telling me not to take another step without being in a boot. How much do you think it really cost to make that boot, $100? Ridiculous.

Hmm, maybe you shouldn't wear it any more. You and Vicki must have great insurance

@looeyville Whoever made that boot (and hundreds like it) made a smart career move early on. They’ll be able to retire at 40 and live on cruise ships. Where did we go wrong?
