What Makes Somebody a "Rich" Person?

My mother-in-law thinks my husband and I are "rich." We're not. We're comfortable. But by HER standards we're rich because we haven't been stupid with our money over the last 40 years and lived paycheck to paycheck. We have an Emergency Fund. We have a Savings Account. We have Investments. Our house is paid for and we have no debt. She just thinks that's because we're "rich." She doesn't see the hard work that went into it and the discipline it required. To compare and contrast, hubby's brother makes about the same income along with his wife that my hubby and I do. They're just 6 years younger than us. They have a mortgage, a second mortgage, maxed out credit cards, live paycheck-to-paycheck, and don't even have $10 in Savings (I'm not joking). It's all about choices. It's not about how much money you make, it's about how much you spend, how you TREAT money mentally and emotionally, and how much you save. I know some myLotters think I'm "rich" because of my travels but I'm not. I'm simply reasonable with money and put aside money when I was younger to be able to enjoy life in my old age. What do you think makes somebody "rich?"

Well for me a rich person isn't gauged by the wealth or the money which he has in his bank account or an income from his successful business endeavour but the spiritual things he has nurtured in his way of life.

@looeyville People looking on don't see the self discipline and sacrifice needed to be comfortable. Like you travel is important to me, and in theory it would be possible for me to go on 10 major trips in a year (remembering that there are 3 of us!) but that would be the savings gone, and I know some people who would do exactly that. Financial intelligence counts for a lot.

As Boudleaux Bryant wrote: Tell me, what are riches but contentment after all? Other folks may think I’m poor but I know it’s not so ’Cause when I count my blessings I’m the richest man I know I personally think that money has NOTHING to do with being rich. (PS: Hubby CAN say this is an Eddy Arnold song…’cause it is! )

It depends who you ask, doesn't it? It's all relative!
