Hi, peeps! It's the 3rd Day of Chuseok Holiday here in Korea. Chuseok is the Korean Thanksgiving Day and the Memorial Day of ancestors. Typically, we observe this holiday in the 8th month of the year, as per the Gregorian calendar. It's a 3-day holiday, but this year, it's a week-long celebration because Friday is another national holiday, which I forgot what it is called, haha. As a tradition, we prepare Songpyeon during Chuseok.
Songpyeon is one of those treats that feels like a warm hug from tradition. It’s a chewy little rice cake that Koreans make during Chuseok, which is kind of like Thanksgiving but with way more rice cakes and ancestral rituals. These half-moon-shaped goodies are filled with sweet stuff like sesame seeds, honey, or red bean paste, and they’re steamed on pine needles—yes, actual pine needles! That gives them a fresh, woodsy aroma that’s totally unique. Families usually gather to make them together, and there’s even a fun belief that if you make the prettiest songpyeon, you’ll have beautiful children. It’s not just about the food—it’s about connection, gratitude, and celebrating the harvest with the people you love.
