Recruitment into the military has just begun in Kenya. It is a two-week exercise that will see over 10,000 Kenyans join the army as cadets, constables, servicemen and women and tradesmen and women. Unfortunately, recruitment into the military is an exercise that is often marred with bribery and determined by social connections. Relatives and friends to top military bosses or government officials are often better placed. Bribes of up to Kenya Shillings 500,000 (USD 5,000) are also given for one to have an upper hand at the job.
