The Shoprite Zen Master

November 4, 2025 4:10pm CST
I was at Shoprite the other night, just trying to grab a few things. Of course, I picked the wrong line. Lady in front of me had a million coupons, scanner kept freezing. I'm standing there getting annoyed, checking my phone like that'll help. Then I notice this older guy behind me just humming along, didn't seem bothered at all. Made me feel kind of ridiculous for being so worked up. By the time I got to the cashier, I'd calmed down. Guess sometimes you need a random old dude at Shoprite to remind you it's not that serious.

He's right, it's not. I feel bad when I'm holding up the line because my credit/debit/EBT card won't work, and I know I don't want people behind me getting ticked off at me. Besides, I don't know what kind of day that person "holding up the line" is having.

I’m glad he inadvertently calmed you down! But I would have been frustrated too.

Yes sometimes it takes a stranger to make you realize certain things, that the small things should be let go, fight the big battles.

There are worst things that can happen beside getting stuck on line, In a supermarket in Latvia years ago shoppers wound up buried when the supermarket ceiling fell in,
