We have all heard of Hindustan Aeronautics. This was an aircraft factory set up by Walchand Hirachand an Indian businessman in collaboration with the Maharaja of Mysore in 1940. Later the aircraft factory was taken over by the government of India, but during the war years it did yeoman service. It assembled the Curtis Hawk fighter from America as well as serviced the C 47 which was being used to supply the Chinese National Army with the air bridge from Assam in East India to China.
When I was doing the staff college course, we had a study tour of the Hindustan Aeronautics and I came to know about the great work being done by this aircraft factory, which was the first aircraft factory in Asia outside Japan.
Well friends, this aircraft factory is now manufacturing the Tejas Mark II supersonic fighter jet with American collaboration. 1940 appears a long time back, but it is worth remembering. I hope you like this bit of information..
