I braved it.

I went to the gym, and started doing my usual thing--There was another guy in there but we mostly just did our own thing.
At one point I got up and asked him something about working out--I don't remember what.
He was really friendly--he said that he and his wife had just recently moved in--and that they were both fitness trainers. I asked him a couple of questions, and he seemed happy to answer me--he did say that his wife gave private coaching for $90, and I didn't say it out loud, but I thought, "No."
He also said he saw me doing an excersise that he said was complex for a beginner, and I should start easier. I'd never done the particular excersise before (pulling a weighted bar down and squatting), so...I guess he's the expert.
After I was done I went for a bit of a walk in the rain until I got at least 2,000 steps (currently 2,574).
Right now, it's lunch time, so I'd better get something.

He's right. If you've never done anything like that before, its often recomended to not only have a spotter anytime a bar bell of any kind is invlved, but to start with free weights and do curls to tone your arms.
