Political Problems in The Social Setting

Here is the not even accurate looking text post

Recently had a very disappointing blow up between difference in ideals with my kid's grandmother on Facebook of all places to be arguing. I made posts about how sad I was to see so many people i thought were genuine kind souls show the same lack of empathy this administration and its followers have toward the less fortunate in this country due to seeing so many actually celebrating that people could not get their food stamps to do grocery shopping due to the govt shut down. So many hateful people finding joy in the misfortune and suffering of others. That had triggered her to add her opinion which is apparently of the very kind I was saddened by and telling me that she had all the facts to prove her opinions and assumptions were correct. This led me to go to her profile page and scroll through the many politically charged divisive posts she had been constantly sharing and I chose one that didn't seem factually correct. It was a text post image meme type of post stating how people were whining about the president's ballroom he's building meanwhile no one said a word when President Obama had torn down some of the white house to build an indoor basket ball court with tax payer money. It was above a black and white picture of the white house that just seemed off to me. It was odd to me that a picture from Obama's term would be in black and white and older looking. I'll include it with the post. I commented asking her if she was sure that the info on the post was accurate to which she replied the picture could be doctored but the facts of the statement remained true. I searched up the picture and found that it was actually the white house during construction under Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. I showed this to her and told her I would be looking into the text claims to see if it were true but these kinds of posts aren't reliable for facts especially if they spread misinformation whether it be photographic or text. Upon looking into the claims she believes are true it turned out it was all incorrect. Obama had not used tax payer money to build a basket ball court and all he did was add basket ball hoops to the already existing tennis court at the white house. The taxpayer money that was approved to be used for the white house was for maintenance and repairs that had already been confirmed to be used for that reason before Obama even got into office. A google search gave me the info and upon showing it to her she refuted it stating you can make google say whatever you want. That ended in her trying to tell me that she's been alive for over 60 years which makes her an expert in knowing majority of SNAP receivers are just lazy jobless women who just sit around and pop out babies for the govt to take care of using HER TAXES. I pointed out flaws in her logic and how the issue could be fixed by taxing the uber rich just as much as they tax the working class especially since with the money from tax evasion in the wealthy alone would be enough to fund social programs sufficiently. I also pointed out that there are mega corporations who get subsidies for pushing their employees onto welfare instead of paying livable wages or paying for better benefits for their employees. Corporate greed is a giant issue that she just ignores. She just thinks if you want to be able to afford food rent and everything you must struggle as she did as she in the same breath complained that she had been denied help from welfare because she was white. So since she had to struggle so should everyone as if majority of welfare recipients are not children, elderly, and/or disabled people. And those who can work must work in order to be eligible for benefits and they do keep up with employment and wages. We ended up in a similar back and forth a few days after when I had shared a post quoting President Truman's speech about Robert Taft on socialism pretty much stating conservatives will always yell socialism about any idea that is proposed to help everyone which is still true to this day in my opinion. She tried to school me I guess stating that the last line of the quote was cut off and that socialism is bad and she should know because she taught history i guess for 7th grade. My ex said he didn't remember her ever teaching that. Whether she did or not is neither here nor there, but I simply responded pretty much what I stated previously and that if she is truly against socialism then she must be against social security and child labor laws and other programs of the likes that fall under socialist policy here in the US. That blew up because she felt I was disrespecting her and being mean intentionally and I guess rude by simply stating facts to disprove her ideals and telling her that if she doesn't want to keep going back and forth then to keep her comments to herself on MY posts about MY views to ignore my political posts the same way I ignore hers. She had also made some statements I didn't appreciate about racism and that really upset me. Haven't spoken to her since except to decline an offer to go with her to a costco and buy clothes for the kids. She can do so if she pleases but I won't be joining her for it. I let her know at the end of the argument that racism is something that won't be tolerated and I don't want my kids being taught those views so to keep it away from the kids. I already keep my son politically informed as much as a 12 year old can understand and I also teach him to be media literate and do research for himself into things he may see and hear in the world before making assumptions or choices based on a simple glance and instant belief. I do believe that if this happens again I'll be limiting contact with them and my ex, kids' father, is in agreeance with me. I want my kids to grow up to be good hearted people with a good head on their shoulders who don't just fall in line with ignorance just because others want them to. I don't feel I was in the wrong at all, do you? I'm sick of Maga Mentality and this political environment we are in.

Honey, sing it loud, and sing it proud. In my humble opinion, you were not wrong. And I am glad you took the time to point out the false information some people throw out as facts. We have got a few people here very happy to see people cut off from SNAP as well.

it is just so ridiculous to me that people will literally rejoice at the suffering of others.
