I am asking because I am curious if you know about these three types of assessment: Assessment for Learning, Assessment as Learning, and Assessment of Learning.
Let me define the three for you.
Assessment for Learning (AFL) is intended to deliver continuous feedback to both teachers and students, informing instruction and promoting student progress. Occurring throughout the instructional process, this formative assessment helps teachers identify student needs, adjust their teaching strategies, and support students in bridging learning gaps. Common practices include quizzes, in-class questioning, and teacher observations.
Assessment as Learning (AAL), on the other hand, emphasizes the active involvement of students in their own assessment. Here, learners take on an active role by tracking their progress, reflecting on their understanding, and setting personal learning goals. This approach cultivates metacognitive skills and encourages students to take ownership of their educational development. Examples are self-assessment activities, peer reviews, and reflective learning journals.
Assessment of Learning (AOL) is most often summative and is carried out after instruction concludes in order to determine what students have achieved. Its main objective is to assess student performance and communicate results to relevant parties such as parents, school leaders, or policymakers. Final assessments, standardized testing, and report cards exemplify this approach.
Let me know if you have encountered these three types of assessment. Did you understand how I defined and expounded them all?
