Today, Dec. 30 marks the 139th Death Anniversary of our national hero, Jose Rizal.
He was shot to death by Guardia Civil by firing squad at Luneta, Manila as per order by the Spanish Colonial Government in 1896.
In our small city, a group of boy and girl scouts, government officials and employees and teachers offered flowers and wreaths to Rizal's monument at the public plaza.
Rizal's heroism stemmed from his two books, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" that exposed the injustices of Spanish colonial regime and thus prompted the Filipino to organize a secret group for uprising.
It was the American Governor-General William Howard Taft named Rizal a Philippine national hero in 1901. The Philippine Commission enacted Act No. 345 on February 1, 1902 making December 30 a public holiday.
