Getting the kids outside

I have been thinking a lot about how much time my grandkids spend sitting around the house with their tablets. When I was growing up, we entertained ourselves by playing games with one another. I think we were more fit than the present generation because we played games outdoors that required us to run and move around a lot. I remember we played red rover, tag, and hide and seek. We even made up a game called Statue of Leverdevel. Do you know these games? Can you add any to the list?

Yes I know those games. Well also played a lot of 4 Square and Hopscotch on the sidewalks on the sidewalks my grandfather made. We then had a huge yard! Now it cost a lot to have a yard that size. In the 1970's when I was a teenager we had no sidewalk in front of the house we lived at, but we were old enough to stand on the curb safely and we talked and laughed! Then when my boys were just in upper grade school, I lived in a small 2 story townhouse with a sidewalk out front and they were standing on the sidewalk talking to some kids while I was fixing dinner. I looked out the window and saw some police pull up nd got out pointing towards my house and saying something to the kids. I went out and asked if there was a problem and was told yes that they look like a gang standing there and they have to go inside! I laughed so hard! Now I live in an apartment with my grown daughter and 6 year old and 1 year old. Not much space in here or outside either. I have medical issues that do not like the cold and the 1 year old has a cough and runny nose. I stayed in with her and my daughter took the older one out. It was cold and very, very icy!

Those were the good old days, weren't they? It's sad we live in a time when kids congregating outdoors would be mistaken for a gang.

My grandkids were only allowed so much time on their tablets and phones thanks to their mother. Growing up in Manhattan for most of their childhood, they went to the parks every day or their sports. As a kid I rode my bicycle, played cowboys and Indians with my two brothers and the neighborhood kids, roller skated, some of your games, or just sat and read outside. Walked everywhere until I could drive.

Their mother did a great job giving them a healthy perspective on the importance of spending time away from technology.

@clrumfelt That she did. I always tell her how proud I am of her - and not in just raising the kids. She’s a Super Mom and Super Person even if she’s not the friendliest daughter in law on earth.

I wasn’t an outdoors girl, but until we were teens, my sister and I did spend significant time outdoors. I loved climbing trees, or just racing each other. Hide and go seek was an absolute favorite. It’s unfortunate for kids mentally AND physically that kids don’t “play” outside their technology these days.

I agree. Simulated games on a computer, and online friends are not good replacements for the real thing.

I've played all of those. Okay not tag, but I played something like it called Marco Polo which is played (usually) in the water. And basically, it's audio tag. One person would close their eyes (kind of like hide and seak) and the other players would swimm around. The person with their eyes closed would shout Marco, and you get the idea I think. As a blind person I kind of liked that one.

Free elimination. Four square. Football catch. Basketball. Hide and seek. Bounce or fly (baseball). Truth or dare. Cycling around the block. Should I go on?

I'm not familiar with all of those, but they sound like fun.

I think some parents do allow their children far too much screen time using phones and tablets. We too entertained ourselves playing games as you said, were fitter as you said, But, had we had what is available today methinks we would have been more like the kids of today than we might like to admit
