My poor childhood friend

I just finished talking with my friend's stepsister and I learned how my friend who died yesterday suffered during her lifetime. She had been taking care of her 8 grandchildren since the parents separated, the mother was her daughter. She was not well off and she was considered a charity case asking financial assistance from her siblings and friends. We used to have contacts thru her neighbor. Then our communication stopped. When I visited my hometown last year, I was not able to go to her place. If I had known that she was sick I should have gone to her.
