We had this multiple murder case a while back in the UK where nurse Lucy Letby was found guilty by jury of killing seven babies on the maternity ward she worked at and injuring seven more babies. You would think the British public would be glad she is in jail forever but not so. There has been a growing movement that she not guilty and the expert witnesses got it wrong. That opinion is mostly in the social media conspiracy theory crowd but it's in the mainstream to. TV Channels have cashed in on the debate with documentaries, Netflix the latest.
The evidence against her was both circumstantial and tangible. She photocopied notes from work around the deaths and kept them in her house, some 300 pages worth, some say macabre trophies. She facebooked the victims parents a lot to see their mindset. She wrote letters in her diary that showed despair and anger with her own mind, the prosecution claiming they were a confession although that part is controversial.
Letby was supposed to have killed the babies through various methods over a year, injecting insulin, blocking airwaves and all sorts... She was the only nurse on duty when the babies were mostly dying over that year. Although her hospital saw just a ten percent increase of baby deaths in that year compared to comparable maternity units it registered concern and how she became a suspect.
Now, Letby is a young white English girl, plain but pretty to some. I suspect that if she was black or Asain then no one would give a fluck about her - even some black and Asian people. This is about race, gender and authority. Since the Covid lockdown a lot of people dont trust authority anymore. We have had baby killing nurses before here but one was a gay male and one was a rather plain young nurse, and in the days of very little or no social media. But that social media allows just about everyone to have their opinion and social media allows them to form a huge gang on both sides, especially those angry with the world.
Medical experts often sell their service to lawyers, for the defense or prosecution. This is common in cot death and infanticide cases. And I think sudden infant death cases are relevant here because, as a society , we dont like the idea of women killing children same came up with Cot Death to soften the likelihood mom did kill her baby. if you look at the evidence for cot death they are overwhelmingly to single working class moms who smoke, drink a bit or use social drugs, the deaths happening mostly between Friday and early Sunday and for some reason baby boys die more than baby girls, less a medical condition in the baby but mental health issues with stressed young moms who cant cope. Middle class cot deaths are extremely rare. Again, we give the benefit of doubt and say Cot Death and not infanticide. Of course most cot deaths are very real and deaths are unexplained so no offence to anyone who has suffered baby loss. I think with the Letby case we are seeing the same sort of thing where we cant contemplate evil in a small group of women. Normally women kill the ones they love/d and men kill over rejection from women. They dont kill babies.

If she appeals her convictions I wonder what will happen.
But I would not be surprised if she is innocent

I haven’t heard of this before now, but I will bet my last euro, I do have a few, that she is guilty as hell. Social media and idiots should stay out of law business. Such an appalling horror. I feel badly for the families and those poor innocent children.

I just saw the documentary about Letby last week and there was even an Asian expert who was asked regarding her case and that Asian guy said what the prosecution claim may not be even correct.
