RIP
A lot of people know him from acting, but the real discovery is the work he did as a director.
Tom Noonan made small, intimate films that feel personal in a way most movies never do. No flash, no grand speeches, just people in rooms trying to connect and often failing.
What Happened Was... is basically two lonely people talking in an apartment, and somehow it becomes tense, funny, sad, and painfully real. It feels like you are eavesdropping on something you are not supposed to see.
The Wife is even quieter. It just sits with a marriage and lets the cracks show. No big dramatic moments. Just behavior. Silence. Distance.
He worked independently and did things his own way. If you care about American film, especially the smaller, stranger corners of it, those movies matter.
If you only know him as an actor, watch the films he directed. That is where he really opened himself up.
