During my tenure as a Senior English Instructor at my last shool, I was regularly called upon to deliver professional development and training to fellow educators, including crash courses for SJAHI associates and mentoring sessions for new and probationary instructors. One of the most impactful experiences was leading an in-house training series focused on modernizing instructional delivery in the English Department. At the time, many colleagues relied heavily on traditional, lecture-based methods. My goal was to introduce more dynamic, learner-centered approaches while also building confidence in blended learning tools. To ensure the training was engaging and practical, I used the following strategies: Modeling before explaining. Rather than simply presenting theories, I demonstrated lessons live, showing colleagues how I structured pattern drills, scaffolded reading tasks, and used formative assessments in real time. This gave teachers a concrete reference point they could immediately adapt. Collaborative lesson design. I facilitated small-group workshops where teachers co-designed lesson plans using the techniques introduced. This peer collaboration made the learning active rather than passive, and it produced materials that colleagues felt ownership over and were more likely to use. What about you, guys?

What are some examples of active learning? Reading aloud? Presentations?

Examples of active learning include storytelling and narrative reconstruction. Reading aloud example is storytelling, reading or retelling a story aloud before the learners. A classic example of presentation is group research presentation, small groups divide a topic and each member presents one section. This is common in the universities in the Philippines.
