New Phone, Who Dis?

Well, my phone did that thing where it still works, but the screen goes black. It's an older model, but I like it, and I don't have a lot of money, so my options were: replace the screen, buy a new old phone, or buy a new new phone. By a "new old phone", I mean buy a reconditioned older phone online, which I had done the last time. After visiting a couple of repair shops and finding out that the screen replacement would cost more than buying the same older model, the repair option was eliminated. However, the lady at the second shop advised me that the model I had was about to lose support, and that is fine to buy used, but I should at least get a newer model. Problem with that is that the newer models start to get pretty pricey, and so I went with option 3 and got a brand new phone. It's a $900 phone but on sale for $200 off, and I could make interest-free payments of $25/month through my carrier, so that ended up being more affordable than spending $400-500 on an older phone. I tend to keep stuff until it breaks, so it's worth it to buy the new phone. I bought my car brand new and have had it for 26 years!

Was it the S26 Ultra you got for $700? Brand new, that's a.£1200 phone here

It was the S26, which is a bit less expensive (I just used the Ultra pic, since it's similar). I wonder why they are so much more expensive there? You'd think with our dumb tariff policies, they would be more expensive here, but maybe they are actually made here by Samsung.

@Ineeddentures oh wow, I didn't realize it was so much more! Yes, they are really good. My last three have been Samsung, and I'm quite satisfied.

@AliCanary The S26 is about £649 here so that's about the same as what you paid. I've seen Samsung's made all over the place. Good phones though, thats the main thing

We upgrade our phones every year. It’s worth the better technology and camera capabilities since we take lots of photos of our grandchildren. I’m happy you bit the bullet for $25 a month. That makes owning a new phone so much easier.

Yes, the cameras are always a huge leap in technology, and I do take a lot of photos. It really helps to get clear photos of my artwork if I want to make prints, for example.

I never recommend buying a reconditioned old phone because these days smart phones have a life span of only 5 years and reconditioning it doesn't actually extend its life. I consider it a waste of money. And operating software and applicants have life spans too. You may be able to save money from buying old reconditioned ones but you can't use it for long because it will be obsolete in no time. So it's good that you bought a new one instead. There are new cheaper phones nowadays.

Well, my s10e lasted six years, and it was already an older model, so I feel like I got my money's worth from it (it cost about $100). One of the reasons I wanted to get it was that the newer models were too big. and I wanted a smaller one that fit easily in my hand and my pocket. Fortunately, Samsung got the hint, and they are offering smaller models again.

I convinced my hubs to go and get a new apple iPhone today. He graduated from an iPhone 7 to and iPhone 17, quite a leap, but technology wise he was years behind the current versions. I insist that when it comes to cellphones, computers and vehicles that we remain current, I do not like being behind the times, and even though his phone worked just fine, it has been traded in.

Yes, I went from A Samsung s10e to an S26, so quite a few years between, and yet it seems so similar. The camera is amazing, though. And the s10e camera was amazing compared to my prior one (Galaxy 3).

I paid around $100 for my last one, but it was reconditioned and older. The previous one was free, but it was for signing with a new carrier.
