I decided i really wanted to see this Boy Band expose that the channel ID did. I think it's finished now so I'm binging.
The first episode was "The Prince of Pop"
It wasn't a whole big deep dive. We have Joey Fatone from N*Sync and many others that speak to the start of their career.
You'll hear from Boys 2 Men, the Backstreet Boys, All 4 One, 98 Degrees and a few music managers.
It's a different perspective that's for sure.
These are bands that I grew up with and absolutely loved....still love if I'm entirely honest.
To see this side of the business...it something that's for sure.
We talk about Lou Pearlman who funded the Backstreet Boys and some other boy bands at the time.
You hear about the segregation that was in the business. All 4 One was the major band affected by that as they had one of each culture in their band.
The 90's were filled with amazing music and bands that were like family.
Behind the scenes was a struggle though. I never realized how hard it was for those bands to really break into the scene. Back then it seemed like it was effortless for these bands to just sky rocket.
As a kid that's what we saw. We didn't see the work. We didn't see the heartbreak. We didn't see the advantages that were taken that hit these bands.
At the time we also still had some racial discrimination going on that as a kid I didn't see.
There is this whole world that as kids growing up with these bands and being kids ourselves we just didn't see.
Be honest with yourself, once we grew up we didn't care either.
We forget that these groups, these artists are human as well. Things happen that they don't want out in the public. They loose themselves in the fame or trying to get the fame.
We're talking members getting depression during a time when it wasn't talked about. Anxiety. Self-Esteem issues.
There's just so much more to everything. I'm on my way to episode two which is called Breaking the Band.

I still enjoy groups like the Backstreet Boys. Thanks for a critique of the series.

I still listen to them too. It's not the same dynamic as it once was. You can listen to multiple boy bands without having to defend loyalties lol

I was already an adult when these bands became popular, but I enjoyed the music and can still bop along to their hits. By that time, though, I knew what a meat grinder the music business was.

I was in elementary school and it was just the big thing. We didn't have that understanding like we have at least an idea now.
